(NEW YORK) Brooklyn-based electronic dreampop act Mahogany are stepping out into the sultry May nighttime with a weekly DJ residency at Ace Hotel New York, complete with release party finale for Mahogany’s long-awaited record “Electric Prisms.”
The spring residency, hosted by Mahogany’s Andrew Prinz and Jaclyn Slimm, promises more of a curated romantic journey, at once familiar as it might be atmospheric. Like Mahogany’s compositions, Prinz and Slimm’s selections draw lines of sonic similarity between such allegedly unrelated acts as ELO and Cocteau Twins, or Nico and Jane Birkin — yet the duo lace together contemporisms any vinyl enthusiast would find luxurious to hear — as represented on the Ace’s custom sound system, no less.
With special guest DJ sets by Tamaryn, Skye Skjelset (Fleet Foxes) and others TBA, Mahogany’s residency culminates with a live performance on Tuesday, May 27th in the Ace Hotel for the official “Electric Prisms” release party. Limited numbers of the latest release will be available, as well as pre-orders for vinyl and other editions.
Mahogany ready new LP, playing shows, including Brooklyn Night Bazaar opening for Frankie Rose (dates, streams)
by Bill Pearis
It’s been seven long years since Brooklyn/Detroit/Chicago dreampop band, Mahogany released their terrific Connectivity, one of the ’00s more underrated albums. Mind you, it took them six years to make that one, so maybe they’re just on a normal schedule. The band (currently Andrew Prinz and Jaclyn Slimm) came out of cryo-sleep this year with a new single, “Phase Break,” another perfect block in Mahogany’s pristine wall of sound. You can stream it below. The track is from the band’s new album which will be released “as soon as we can.”
In the meantime, Mahogany have been playing shows again. Did anyone catch them at CMJ? They’ve got two NYC shows lined up next month. They’ll play a free show at Brooklyn Night Bazaar on November 2, on a bill with Frankie Rose, Monogold and Heavenly Beat. Then they’ll headline Glasslands on November 11 with The Bright Silence, Metalleg, and Men and Whales. Tickets for that show are on sale now.

“From an octet to a duo, now, which sees band’s founder Andrew Prinz (inspired musician and graphic designer) and currently Jaclyn Slimm, song Phase Break is a brave 8 mins-long sound journey, mixing their own eclectic chemistry of Factory rec / Section 25-esque danceability and futuristic-symphonic dreampop aesthetic. Synths, cello, drum machine beats, 12 string guitar, sequencer, train and ballet never spoke much each other until this track, I believe.”
“Like Tom Waits, art-pop concern Mahogany keep getting weirder while staying the same (to whit, Wikipedia describes the once-octet thusly: “an electric music-based multidisciplinary media ensemble currently working in Philadelphia, New York, Chicago, and other locations”).”
“Another sign that a new LP may be near is the band’s recent release of the new single and long-form video for ‘Phase Break’, which continues on band visionary Andrew Prinz’s ambitious quest for all things grand in scope. You’ve got it all with this one: sexy French cooing from his partner and muse Jaclyn Slimm, cellos, ballerinas, train tracks and most of all, a three-part saga that sometimes harkens back to the electronic period output of Factory Records artists such as Section 25.”
